Performing Rights Organisations (PRO’s)

To fully understand the role of Performing Rights Organisations (PRO’s) you should read the History of Music Section.

A PRO essentially operates to simplify the burden of administering and collecting payments from companies who use music. These companies include television broadcasters, theatres, pubs and clubs and internet companies such as YouTube. Instead of every individual music company having a separate agreement with each individual TV station, restaurant or website owner, a PRO will issue one single license, and then divide the monies received for that license between all the various music companies and composers. Because music use was traditionally administered on a territory by territory basis, different PRO’s operate in different countries performing this same function. Now that music use is increasingly cross border, PRO’s are beginning to look at new ways of working together across the world.
