Royalty Free Music

So What Is Royalty Free Music?

Royalty Free Music is a term used to describe music that can be purchased for use without the requirement to pay further royalties for the use of the music. This means that the music publisher and the composer that writes the music for the publisher is not a member of any collection society anywhere in the world.

You need to be careful when you are purchasing Royalty Free Music because often it is not Royalty Free at all! A number of companies market music as Royalty Free Music, but then in the small print, they mention that you need to report the music use to them so that they can collect royalties from the broadcast of that music from TV stations, cinemas, theatres etc. The part that these companies justify their claim to be royalty free refers to the fact that usually the customer who purchases the music, say someone making a tv programme, will not usually have to pay further music royalties once they have paid for the music use up front. This is because it is the TV station that pays the royalties, not the production company who makes the TV programme. In this way, Cinephonix could claim to be royalty free, but we don't because we think it is confusing.

You can find companies who sell truly royalty free music. To do this, the company and the composers who write for that company can not be members of a collection society anywhere in the world. Since most professional music composers who earn a full time living from composing quality music are members of collection societies (because these societies form a major part of a composers income), you may find that truly royalty free companies do not offer the level of quality production values that mainstream production music libraries provide. True Royalty Free music is often described as Buyout Music or Rights Free Music.

At Cinephonix we try to be clear and transparent in how you can use our music. You can purchase our music simply by selecting your intended usage. For example, music for TV, music for TV ads or music for websites etc. Once you've selected the accurate usage, you are free to use our music in your production. It is cleared worldwide for that use. Simple, straightforward. We do not describe Cinephonix music as Royalty Free Music because, technically, it isn't. However, our simple licensing means that when you purchase our music, you only have to pay one single upfront fee for the music use. We do collect royalties from companies that broadcast our music. These companies are usually major television broadcasters, YouTube, Cinemas and others. These companies have blanket licenses in place with the major collection societies. So it's not up to you to pay these costs.
