Finding the right music to fit in with your
video project can be a challenging process. You spend hours and hours searching
through music libraries for a track and when you find one you think will work,
you slip it into the edit and it turns out it’s not quite right. You’re then
back to the drawing board and square 1. That’s why we’ve put together some top tips
on how to discover the best music for your videos.
Make it an important part of the process
The right music is an essential part of your video. You could have the best video in the world but if you don’t have the correct music to fit, it all falls apart. When you find a track, it should have the ability to influence your editing decisions and engage your viewers. You should make choosing the music a crucial part of your process. Pick your music with intention.
Choose your music early
Finding the right music for your video can take a surprising amount of time, so it’s vital that you choose the music as near to the start of the process as possible. This will give you plenty of time to make amendments and search for another track if required.
Planning ahead means that you can gain approval from your client on the tracks early on. Gaining approval before the end of an edit will protect you from the client returning and asking for a music change last minute. You’ll be one step ahead of the process when you choose the music in advance, most editors tend to create a rough cut and try several music tracks beneath to see which track fits better.
More on trialling tracks
This is really beneficial as it allows you to have a feel of the combination of video and sound but can be time consuming, so it should be done early on during the post-production process. Planning ahead also allows you to plan your budget – licensing the music early will give you a sense of what budget is left. Cinephonix will work with you to provide the best license and tracks possible for your budget so you’re always getting the absolutely best for your money.

Set the Mood
The mood of your video should be pretty obvious based on it’s content. For example, if you’re making a video about the London Marathon, the music should be motivational, powerful and energetic as oppose to eerie and trashy.
Also, consider your target audience. If the video is for a corporate business, it may not be appropriate to choose a hard rock track.
Use our mood, style and genre grid to search for tracks appropriate to your video. Search for multiple elements at a time to really narrow down your search.

Music Throughout
Consider the type of video project when choosing the music – some videos may not need music throughout the whole video. Corporate videos tend to only require snippets of music as opposed to demo reels which typically use music throughout. If music is used throughout the video, it may become distracting. Where possible, you should let the environmental and background music assist the audio of the project. For short projects, you could use the same track to open and close the video.
Download submixes and STEM files of tracks from the Cinephonix library. Submixes often include the shortened version of the track which would fit perfectly in a short video. You can also loop these to suit your edit points. STEM Files allow you to download the individual instrument files of the track giving you complete creative control when editing. Remove, quieten or tweak instruments in an instant.
Real Instruments vs Digitalized
Beware! If you want live recordings you will pay more for those. So if you’re working on a budget, using digital instrument tracks is the way forward. With the advances of technology these days, your client is unlikely to tell the difference anyway.

Music Library Vs Composer
Budget is the main consideration here – it is not cheap or quick for a composer to score the film/video. If you’ve got the budget to commission a composer for original music then go for it! You can customize the music specifically to your edit points and really create a track that you and your client love.
Not all of us have these kinds of budgets though do we? That’s where Cinephonix comes in – access 1000’s of premium quality, cost effective tracks in an instant and take advantage of our customization options to make the track your own.
